Typography and Pictograms

Clarity of typography, pictograms, icons and graphic elements such as arrows contribute to the readability of passenger information, as well as visual style. Signing systems for busy public spaces, railway stations and airports rely on display typefaces for visibility and recognition. Typography in languages other than English should reflect local conventions to ensure it is easy to read and understand.

Maps range from line diagrams, geometric floorplans and three-dimensional models to interactive screens and walk-through displays. When navigating large public spaces, people rely on maps to understand their surroundings and how to get to different places. Maps should be intuitive to follow despite having to convey a large amount of information.
